Birmingham Great Barr Hotel

My stay was only for one night, a sunday night. The hotel should provide hot foot between 7.00pm and 9.00pm however, only cut sandwiches were available.

This is a regular hotel location for me now and I have therefore built up a measure of rapport with the staff particularly those associated with the breakfasts. The hotel has a nice ambiance and 'feel' about it.

Reception staff not very welcoming. Room fine (although at the end of a gloomy underground corridor which was being decorated at the time )but bathroom was in need of some modernisation (tiles falling off walls, dingy shower curtain etc). Drinks in the bar incredibly expensive. Fine for the price we paid, but if we had paid full price would have been very disappointed. Good access to NEC along M6.

The hotel is situated in a very nice area but only a few minutes from the M6. Excellent value for money for single people where you are not paying for a double/twin room for single occupancy. The substantial breakfast certainly prepares you for the day ahead.

Check - in staff needs to smile. The extractor fan in the bathroom was not working, hence lots of condensation. The hotel is lovely, clean, breakfast was fantastic. The staff in the dining area was friendly. Decor of the room is good and the linen white and crisp. Over all it was a lovely stay.

A reasonable 3* hotel, with small, but adequate rooms, a decent breakfast & good car parking in a good location close to the M6 for a very reasonable price - excellent value.

The room we booked (a double) was not available so we were given two smaller single rooms. Very bad service and no sort of apology or discount.

I have rated the service as very bad due to the following: The location is not ideally located for Birmingham, it is approx. 7 miles from the centre and an expensive taxi ride. All 105 guestrooms DO NOT have views of the hotel's landscaped gardens. We could see the roof of the floor below us and a carrier bag full of rubbish. The telephone in our room was out of service. We reported the issue when we arrived and it was not fixed during our stay. On the Saturday evening there was a very loud party taking place at the hotel which made it impossible for us to stay in our rooms and we stayed out until it was over.

A pleasant atmosphere; other casual hotel users noisy until 1.30 in the morning; rooms very hot at this time of year (July); good for the one night I stayed but would have said something about the disturbance if I stayed longer! I would go there again.

We arrived at the hotel and made our way to room was not ready and we asked for another, we were give the Wedgwood suite for a small extra charge. The room was lovely, as was the bathroom. We found the staff friendly & helpful, even giving us plates & cutlery for our take away! Would stay here again in the Wedgwood Suite for sure.

Location
The Great Barr is ideally located for Birmingham and the midlands, Literally 5 minutes drive fron the M6 Jnc 7. Much easier than driving through the city centre. This modern hotel is situated in attractive grounds about 5 miles from the centre of Birmingham.

Rooms
The rooms are of a very good standard, they are traditionally decorated and in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Bathrooms are clean and well designed and are mostly white tiled.

Food & Drink
The restaurant is situated at the back of the hotel next to the popular bar area. It serves a mix of cuisine including some local favourites and European dishes.

General
The Great Barr Hotel is the largest independent Hotel in North Birmingham. By Road
Birmingham is at the hub of the UK motorway network, enabling visitors to travel directly from the M6, M1, M40 and M42.

From The M6
Leave @ Junction 7 -M6 Motorway, follow A34 towards Birmingham, at Scott Arms junction turn right onto Newton Road for approx. 1 1/4 miles then take the right filter lane just past Malt Shovel Public House to Pear Tree Drive.

From The M5
Leave @ Junction 1 - M5 Motorway, take the second exit, which is signposted Great Barr/Walsall, follow the short expressway to the end and take the third exit, which is a right turn off the island. Follow the road right to the end and turn right at the church onto the Newton Road. The Hotel is situated 1 mile down the Newton Road on the left hand side. There is a large sign for the Great Barr Hotel on the roadside just before the Malt Shovel public house. Turn left just before this sign onto Pear Tree Drive.

From Birmingham City Centre
Follow signs for the M6 - Junction 6. Instead of choosing to take the M6, take the A34, which is signposted Walsall/Great Barr/Perry Barr. Follow the A34 north until you see signs welcoming you to Great Barr. At the traffic lights at the Scott Arms public house/Scott Arms shopping centre, turn left onto the Newton Road. Follow the Newton Road for around 1/2 mile and take the right slip road past the Malt Shovel public house onto Pear Tree Drive.

Public Transport
Train to New Street Station - Birmingham, then number 51 bus to Scott Arms the 451 bus to Newton Road heading towards West Bromwich.

By Rail
Birmingham New Street, the UK’s largest interchange station. London is only 90 minutes away and trains run direct to many regional towns and cities.
